Comfy Cow recalls ice cream pints in US over E.coli contamination

FBR Staff Writer Published 09 August 2017

The Comfy Cow, a Louisville-based ice cream chain has voluntarily issued the recall of nine ice cream flavors sold in pint containers owing to fears of E. coli contamination and/or high coliform counts.

According to the ice cream manufacturer, the recalled flavors are Banana Puddin Y’all, Chocolate Squared2, Cookies and Cream, Cow Trax, Intense Dark Chocolate, Double Fold Vanilla, Georgia Butter Pecan, Strawberry Fields Forever and Salted Caramel.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) which is aware of the ice cream recall stated that the possibly contaminated products were sold mainly in retail stores across Kentucky, Missouri, Tennessee and Indiana. They were distributed between 13 June and 21 July.

The advisory from the FDA asks consumers who had bought the possibly contaminated ice cream products to return them to where they had bought for a full refund or to discard them.

According to the regulator, the issue came to light following an internal firm product sample testing by The Comfy Cow which had shown the flavors to be positive for either E. coli or had high counts of coliform.

The FDA added that E. coli bacteria can result in diarrhea and dehydration and that most infected people do recover. However, the FDA warns that the bacteria can be deadly.

It also revealed that no illnesses following the consumption of the products have been reported till date.

The Comfy Cow on its website stated: “We took immediate corrective actions and tested clean with the follow up inspection. We voluntarily recalled the pints that were made for our retail stores.

“We have taken extra precautions to make sure that none of the voluntary recalled pint lot numbers are in the scoop shops. Again, the safety of our loyal customers is our first priority.”
